Boston 25 recently paid a visit to the Davis K-8 School to learn more about and highlight the Career and Technical Education offerings being made available to eighth grade students as part of the Davis' What I Need Now (WINN) Block at the end of the day.

back here at 714 the high cost of college as many high school students interested in learning a trade these days pays good and of course no loans to pay back yeah and an initiative uh program and a Brockton Middle School is now giving students a chance to sample different vocational opportunities at a younger age on the menu today at the Davis School in Brockton homemade waffles with real whipped cream and strawberries all being prepared by 8th graders it's different because we get to have fun and do work at the same time it's more opportunities to work with our friends not only does it not feel like work it also doesn't feel like a class and that's the secret to this recipe and then also involves math and measurements and reading so it involves a lot of different parts of you know the curriculum into cooking and it's science too this is the Career and Technical education program at the Davis School teachers like Jennifer Baker who usually teaches English volunteered to add this glass to our workload oh I was on board right away I think it's a lot of fun everybody grab a camera it's not something you tend to see in a middle school but when principal Darlene Campbell had a chance to launch the program here she jumped at it you see the difference in some of these youngsters because it's doing its Hands-On it's getting into it it's creating um and we're tapping other parts of their brain which I it it's just wonderful the program is now in its second year giving students Hands-On instruction in 6 are you culinary arts drones and Robotics entrepreneurship woodworking photography and Bridge Building I love science I have since I was a kid and and I want that love of science to be passed on to other students Steven Celia teach is his students how to build a load-bearing Bridge Hands-On project he hopes will lead some students into stem Fields you can see their excitement when they say wow this works oh when it doesn't work they go wait a minute okay wait wait what did I do wrong how can I make it better they could read about that in a book but they're not going to be excited by that excited and thinking about the future in a way they hadn't before these classes are amazing like it teaches students lots of stuff important stuff for real life skills I feel like it this class will be due really good for like kids futures for Campbell this is all about opening the students eyes to choices they didn't even know existed I just like it because it says to kids this college and that's great but there's vocations um that that you might want to be involved in that are a different Avenue we all know trying to get an electrician or a plumber or HVAC or whatever today forget about it you wait months so uh opening kids up to the possibilities of this is wonderful so the demand for slots in the state's Vocational High School has been growing beyond the systems capacity Governor Healey recently filed a supplemental budget includes money to create 3,000 additional seats
